Definition
A virus is a program that slows your computer down, or makes your computer run in a way it was not inteneded to. There is a wide range of severity for viruses. From a virus that slows your computer down a little, to ones that absolulty destroy computer.
Prevention
The best way to prevent attacks from viruses is to have a good antivirus program installed on your computer. My favourite is
avast, as it does not slow your computer down a lot while running, but it picks a lot of viruses.
Removal
Once you get a virus it can be very difficult to fix them. If you did not have a virus program already install, most viruses that are really well written will block there installation. In that case you would need to take it to a specialist. Otherwise you can install a free program like
Avast and that should be able to clear some of them up. Even after that some clean up will be required on the computer to make it work.
